Visitor Wireless now Available at Altoona, University Park Campuses

Published on May 15, 2009

Wireless access to the Internet is becoming quite common. For years Penn State faculty, students and staff have been able to use Penn State's University wireless service. For security reasons only those with an authorized account are able to use this capability. Yet increasingly, visitors to campus have asked how they could access a wireless network while here. Now they can.

AT&T now offers its wireless service on Penn State's University Park and Altoona campuses. The service is expected to expand to other campuses as well.

When campus visitors try to access the Internet, they'll see AT&T's wireless network available for their use. Current AT&T wireless customers can use this as they do anywhere else. Those who are not current AT&T customers can choose to pay AT&T a fee for wireless access.

"The addition of AT&T's wireless Internet service will allow our visitors to stay connected to their e-mail and other Internet services while on campus," said Kevin Morooney, vice-provost for Information Technology.

"This will be a valuable service to anyone visiting campus, for any reason. It will be especially convenient for parents while on campus and for those visiting for business reasons," added Jeff Reel, director in Telecommunications and Networking Services.
